Compared to European standards, Germany is among the countries with the highest electricity costs, a situation that will not foreseeably change in the course of the energy transition. These conditions strengthen the modern energy customers’ wish to deal with their own energy costs, in order to exert increasing influence on their energy costs.

The German government has decided on the intensive involvement of the consumer side in the electricity market in its 'Electricity Market White Paper' in the summer of 2015. The demand for flexibility is becoming more important in electricity market 2.0, in which increased fluctuations in electricity prices are expected.

We analyze the further development of electricity consumption and the load structure. This will change in particular due to the energy transition. Already today, it is clear that the still currently used standard load profiles are outdated. Based on our extensive data base, as well as our know-how, we create realistic (regional) hourly load and consumption forecasts. Pilot study: electricity market - work package unconventional flexibility options

Client: Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi)

We examined the need for changes in the market and its regulatory design for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). We examined the future role of so-called unconventional flexibility options (flexible loads, standby power systems, controllable renewable energies, etc.) in a specific work package. We came to the conclusion that flexible load in particular can be provided at an affordable cost and in sufficient quantities in the future.

Electricity demand study

Client: Energy supply company

The focus of this study was an analysis of changes in electricity consumption in the coming decades. Our approach: we examine to what extent annual electricity consumption, as well as the hourly load profile, will continue to develop. We analyzed the most important influencing factors such as electro-mobility, technological progress and efficiency, economic structural change and climate control in detail and outline their impact on electricity consumption and load. In order to estimate the evolution of the load profiles of individual sectors, we worked out a variety of individual consumption profiles for the sector’s households, trade/commerce/services, transport, industry and the public sector. Due to the significant uncertainties in these developments, we look at different scenarios within the framework of this project. This way, we can represent an optimal range of possible developments.
