What is Portfolio Management to utilities? On the one hand, it includes the balance of power-generation and purchase, and, on the other hand, their own consumption and sales. For our industrial customers, it usually has to do with optimizing energy purchases, possibly in connection with the optimization of their own energy-generating systems. As part of our integrated portfolio management, we consider procurement/self-generation and sales/own consumption, as a whole. The fall in prices on the wholesale markets for electricity complicates the sound operation of conventional generation plants in terms of their internal production.

Changed producers profile

Adjustments in the marketing of the systems are needed in order to secure long-term profitability, if the potential of other markets is used (for example as reservation bidding phases for balancing energy), the production profile changes. Accordingly, Portfolio Management must respond as a whole. Thus, although ultimately the resulting 'open positions' are managed, individual projects both in the area of procurement/self-generation as well as in marketing/sales can begin.

Building a portfolio and risk management in the gas industry

Client: Energy supply company

In this project, the customer aimed to completely realign the portfolio management to respond to changing conditions in the gas market. We supported the energy supply company – in this and several port projects – to make the most of every opportunity. The project steps included the establishment of the wholesale market price as transfer pricing, the development of a portfolio management strategy, the optimal management of long-term purchase agreements, as well as the development of risk management.

This power supply company’s commission saw us optimize a portfolio of several power plants that generate heat in addition to electricity and feed it into a connected heating network.
