Electricity market pilot study: Energy Only Market (EOM) Functionality & Capacity Market Impact Analysis

Client: German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi)

The scope of this project was to examine the suitability of the EOM as well as the impact of possible alternative options for the redesign of the existing capacity market. This study is the basis for forthcoming decisions on changes to the design of the market and its regulatory framework.

Workshop: The development and operation of electricity markets in Germany

Client: German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA)

In this workshop, we worked with members of the UBA to examine how the European electricity market functions and its design on the basis of simplified empirical and analytical models. One focus was on the complex interdependencies in the EU internal market for electricity, as the share of renewable energy grows.

Energy supply security in Germany and its neighboring countries: Transnational monitoring and evaluation

Client: German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi)

This project saw us develop a new method for evaluating the security of energy supplies, in cooperation with Consentec GmbH. Above all, this method models the effects of cross-border electricity exchanges correctly. The study clearly demonstrated that up to 2025, given the prognosis of ENTSO-E, load and generation in Germany and its ‘electric neighbors’ can be balanced at all times – with a probability of nearly 100%.

Energy market design of the future

Client: German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA)

What are the existing constraints in the design of the market and the regulatory framework of the electricity transmission system? In this study for the UBA, we identified weaknesses and developed proposals for possible improvements. One focus of our analyses is the legal and regulatory framework, and the options for customizing accounting and balancing energy systems, the balancing power markets, and the network fee system.

The electricity grid’s contribution to climate protection

Client: German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA)

We worked with Consentec on this project that analyzed the impact of the increasing proportion of renewable energies being generated on the German transmission systems. We also identified the resulting adaptation and expansion requirements. Our analyses draw on model-based simulations of various possible technology mix scenarios, and the regional distribution of sites for the continued expansion of renewables.
