Christoph Schmitz is member of the extended board and has been with r2b since 2018. Prior to that, he was already part of our team from 2013 to 2016.  

His consulting work at r2b focuses on quantitative economic analyses of the development of the German and European electricity supply system and the economic viability of existing and new business models. Christoph also deals with system modelling, in particular on energy-economic scenarios in the European internal electricity market, on the market ramp-up and regulation of sector coupling technologies as well as on climate protection and other policy instruments.  

Christoph has extensive consulting and project management experience from numerous projects for public and private sector clients in Germany and abroad. He advises ministries and authorities at federal and state level on the further development of market and regulatory designs, on the design and implementation of climate protection instruments, such as the German coal phase-out, or on the development of climate protection, transformation or hydrogen strategies. Christoph is an expert in investment evaluations and profitability analyses, price forecasts and energy market scenarios, as well as in the development of sustainable investment and marketing strategies. In addition, his experience in energy trading and portfolio management enables him to support companies in optimising operational processes in the areas of energy procurement and sales as well as energy industry risk management.  

Christoph gained his first professional experience as a consultant at Ernst & Young GmbH in 2012, before working at r2b energy consulting in energy market modelling and consulting from 2013 to 2016. From mid-2016 to the beginning of 2018, he expanded his energy industry experience as a senior consultant at SE Scherbeck Energy GmbH. Christoph studied economics in Marburg and Cologne, with a focus on energy economics and economic policy and completed his master’s thesis on “Analysis and modelling of gas demand in German large-scale industry”.
