Prof. Dr. Felix Müsgens is managing director and founding partner of r2b energy consulting.
Since 2011, Felix has held the Chair of Energy Economics at the BTU in Cottbus, where his research focuses on energy economics, energy data analytics and energy system modelling. He is also head of the Energy Innovation Centre (EIZ), where more than 100 scientists conduct research on sector coupling and digitalization in the energy system.
Felix´s research focuses on market design in energy markets, quantitative analyses of the energy system, energy trading and portfolio management. He has published more than 80 scientific articles, including numerous peer-reviewed articles in leading energy economics and industrial economics journals. His textbook “Energy Trading and Risk Management” was published in 2024.
In his role as a consultant, Felix has carried out numerous projects on a wide range of topics within the energy sector, e.g. on the evaluation of investments and contracts, dispatching optimization of power plant and gas contract portfolios, portfolio and risk management, and market design (balancing markets, capacity markets, subsidy and integration programs for renewable energies). He leads research and consulting projects for industrial companies and energy suppliers as well as associations (e.g. BDEW) and federal and state ministries (e.g. BMBF, BMWK, BMUV, MWE/Brandenburg). He has also been involved in several (inter)national arbitration proceedings as a scientific expert.
Felix is a member of numerous committees, such as the Scientific Advisory & Project Board (SAPB) of 50Hertz and the academy project “Energy Systems of the Future” (ESYS) and is an associated researcher in the RWI Research Network (Leibniz Institute for Economic Research) and the Energy Policy Research Group (EPRG) at the University of Cambridge. Research stays lasting several months have taken him to the University of Cambridge, the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES) and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, among others.
Prior to this, Felix gained extensive industry experience in his roles as Head of Portfolio Management at Trianel European Energy Trading GmbH and as a research assistant at the Institute of Energy Economics at the University of Cologne (EWI), as well as in the management consultancy of Prof. Dr. C. C. von Weizsäcker. He studied economics at the University of Bonn and received his doctorate from the Institute of Energy Economics (EWI) and the DFG Research Training Group on Risk Management at the University of Cologne on the topic of “The Economics of Wholesale Electricity Markets”.
