Robert Diels, M. Sc.
Head of Energy Policy
Robert Diels is head of energy policy and has been with r2b energy consulting since 2013.
His consulting work at r2b focuses on the economic analysis of the functioning and further development of the market and regulatory design of electricity markets. Robert has been involved in numerous projects for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and the German Environment Agency (UBA), as well as a variety of private-sector projects in a leading role.
He has extensive knowledge of the German and European electricity markets and their regulatory frameworks. Among other things, Robert heads the qualitative and quantitative analyses on the development of future requirements for the electricity supply system and on the development of security of supply. He deals with energy policy issues relating to barriers and misguided incentives in market and regulatory design at German and European level, the development of solutions to overcome these, the design of energy policy measures and instruments, and developments in power plant savings, hydrogen infrastructure and energy consumption.
Robert is a recognized expert on issues relating to the market and regulatory design of European electricity markets. He is active in various committees, such as the scientific advisory board of the Platform for a Climate-Neutral Electricity System (PKNS), participates in research projects at German and European level (e.g. for the Pentalateral Energy Forum) and regularly gives lectures at specialist events on current energy industry topics.
Previously, Robert gained valuable practical experience in energy supply for chemical parks, particularly in the areas of electricity, heat and steam, during his time as a working student in asset management at Currenta GmbH & Co. KG. He studied economics in Muenster and Cologne, specializing in energy economics and econometrics, and wrote his master’s thesis on “Analysis of the efficiency comparison of European TSOs in the context of incentive regulation” in collaboration with Amprion GmbH.
